Department of Political Science

The Department of Political Science at the Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University, Amravati was established in the year 2017. It is part of the Faculty of Humanities. It runs a post graduate course of two years with the intake capacity of 40 students in the first year.

It aims at inculcation of political insights and knowledge among the students to promote democratic values in the society to build a better India.

The mission of the postgraduate program in Political Science is to provide students with a concrete grasp of political thought, research, political processes and institutions in India and India's relations with other political systems across the globe.

=> Some of the objectives of the department are:
1) To develop politico-analytical thinking among the students in the field of education and research.
2) To promote political interpretations of changes in the society.
3) To build networks with political science departments, institutions, associations intellectuals, and academicians in the field of political science.
4) To promote the study of political theories and practices.
5) To promote the study of political science through interdisciplinary perspective (i.e. political sociology, political anthropology, political economy, gender and politics etc.)

Other than the classroom teaching remedial and NET coaching classes are conducted by the department. To increase political consciousness and communication skills among the students a participatory activity of ‘Discussion Forum’ is conducted at the department. Another activity named ‘An Activity on awareness about the constitution of India’ is also conducted by the department to increase awareness about the Indian constitution.

Study tours to various places with political importance like parliament in New Delhi, Red fort, Amritsar - Wagha Border, Sevagram ashram, Punjabrao Deshmukh administrative training academy etc are the few highlights of the extra-curricular activities conducted by the Department.

Co-curricular/Extra Curricular/Extension Activities:
1. Activity on Awareness about Constitution:
This activity was conducted in the first semester of 2019-2020.
On every Friday of the week this activity was conducted at the department in which teachers provided information on the various articles, amendments and overall guidance about the Indian Constitution.
An objective of this activity was to create awareness about the Constitution among Post graduate students of the department.
Students actively participated in this student centric activity of the department. Many important topics were handled in this activity, to name few are given in the following chart:

This activity helped students to increase their awareness about the Indian Constitution. It also helped in inculcating constitutional values among students through the class participation in this activity.

2. Discussion Forum:

Department of Political Science conducted this student centric activity for the entire year of 2019-2020 before the corona pandemic. Objective of this activity was to encourage students to participate of the self-monitored group discussions on the various important topics of current affairs. Students of the department actively participated in this activity. Coordinator and teachers of the department supervised this activity without much interference. It also encouraged students to monitor and organize discussions. This activity was conducted on each Saturday of the week after the teaching hours.

The Forum started from Friday, 27th September 2019, the next day was holiday that’s why it was conducted a day prior to the schedule. The very first lecture was conducted by the coordinator of the department to introduce students to this important student centric activity.

Various topics were covered in the discussion, some of which are mentioned here:

2.	Article 370 and Kashmir Issue
3.	Citizenship Amendment Act and NRC
4.	Student’s Issues, reasons and students movements
5.	Indian Republic
6.	Method of qualifying and dis- qualifying civil servants
7.	Public Safety Act (PSA)

Weekly discussions on such important current affairs topics were conducted. It increased students participation in departmental academic activities and provided a platform to the students to interact with each other on current affairs.
