Department of Public Administration

 

It is a matter of immense importance and proud that in India, Public Administration at the University level was first introduced in Nagpur University in the year 1949. It originated as a one year Diploma Course “Diploma in Local Self-Government” which was designed to produce trained manpower for local self-government bodies. Originally named as the Department of Local Self-Government was established by the University on 24 September, 1949, it was in the following year, rechristened as the Department of Public Administration and Local Self-Government to accord with its new status; the Department, with effect from 12 September, 1950, had been expanded with the launching of a two-year degree of Masters in Public Administration.

Programme Outcomes:
=> To develop extensive knowledge amongst the students about the emerging issues and ideas in public administration.
=> The students will develop abilities to illustrate the major theories of public administration and critical thinking.
=> To enhance the aptitude of students about contemporary development in the discipline.
=> To develop the analytical capabilities of the students to examine the policy making process and independent opinion formation regarding different types of public policies.
=> To inculcate amongst the students research culture by encouraging them to undertake research on current issues.
=> The students will develop cognitive and practical skills and objective thinking.
=> They will learn collaborative and participative working.

Research

Activities:
The Department is involved in conducting various Research works in the form of Dissertation, Projects Reports, PhD Thesis, Major/Minor Projects etc.The faculties of the department are continuously involved in the Research through paper publications in reputed Journals & Periodicals and paper presentations in various National and International Seminars and Conferences.

The Department of Public Administration & LSG is the Research Centre since its inception. It is instrumental in providing assistance to Research Scholars for completing their PhD and undertaking research. The area of ongoing research work covers a very wide arena including Rural Development, Good Governance, Panchayati Raj and Urban Local Bodies, Financial Institutions, Industries, Public Sector Industries, Women’s Empowerment, Consumer Protection, Social Governance, Environment Protection, Policy analysis, Disaster Management, Administrative Culture, Bureaucracy, Population Studies, Administrative Reforms, Educational Governance etc.They are dealt in depth and the research conducted is of practical utility to the Government. In many cases the Government of Maharashtra has taken the note of the suggestions.

Admission:

Student Intake Capacity:
=> M.A. (Public Administration)=60
=> LSGD (Diploma in Local Self Government)=50
=> Ph. D. = 50 (Depend on the availability of Supervisors)

Admission Process:
=> M.A. Programme: The admission to programme is through the centralized admission process (CAP) conducted by the RTM University on the basis of merit. This is generally conducted in the month of June/July every year. The detailed information is made available on www.nagpuruniversity.ac.in
=> LSGD: Admission programme to the Diploma is generally conducted in the month of June/July every year.
=> Ph.D. Programme: Candidates those who are interested to pursue Ph.D. must have cleared Ph.D. Entrance Test (PET) conducted by the RTM Nagpur University or M.Phil or cleared NET/SET. The details of the entrance test are available on the Ph.D. portal of Nagpur university website.

Eligibility For Admission:

=> Graduates from any recognized university of any faculty.
=> Candidates from other Universities seeking admission in the department to the any course are required to obtain an Eligibility Certificate from RTM Nagpur University and Submit original documents along with Migration Certificate.

Students Achievement:

=> More than 15 students from the Department have cleared NET/SET examination in Public Administration from 2011-2021.
=> The students of the Department have been placed in the various places in government and private sectors: as teachers/faculty members in different Colleges, Universities, Schools, Police Department, Banks, in State and Local government institutions and in various places working as entrepreneurs; some are working with NGOs etc.
=> The alumni of the Department are occupying very responsible and reputed positions in several walks of life all over the country and abroad. Students from the Department are leading key leadership positions in public, non-profit and private sectors. The contribution of the Department to public life in India, both through its alumni and the ideas and reflections that it has thrown up over the years, has been enormous and eminent.
