The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering was instituted in the year 1993 to start a 4-year B.E. degree programme affiliated to the Madurai Kamarajar University. The first batch of students graduated from the department in the year 1997. A post graduate programme leading to M.E. degree in ‘Digital Communication and Networking’ was introduced in the year 2001. Consequent upon the integration of all engineering colleges under Anna University, Chennai, the affiliation both programmes were shifted to the Anna University from 2002 onwards. Based on the infrastructure and faculty strength the department was recognized as research centre by Anna University in 2003 to offer M.S (by Research) and PhD programs in the area of Electronics and Communication Engineering. In the year 2004, AICTE approval was obtained for introducing a second post graduate programme in ‘VLSI Design’. After a brief period of affiliation to Anna University, Chennai, the institution was finally declared Deemed-to-be University status by Govt. of India from 2007.

The department has well established infrastructure and facilities to meet all the requirements for the range of programs it is offering. All the laboratories are well equipped with necessary hardware and software resources to meet the curriculum requirements and provide opportunities for additional learning. The well trained and experienced technical staffs of the department are ably supporting the students in the teacher’s efforts to impart vital practical skills. With all these facilities and resources, the department is able to focus on industry-specific skills and impart the same.
Communication Laboratory :
To conduct practical classes on analog electronics circuits providing matter-of-fact on diodes, transistors, FET, and digital electronic circuits. The lab is equipped with latest multiple power supplies, Digital Storage Oscilloscopes, Analog Oscilloscopes, Function generators, Logic Scopes, etc. This lab is also utilized by the students to gain more practical knowledge pertaining to Wireless Communications including study of modulation and de-modulation techniques, Transmitters and Receivers, analog and digital communication methodologies etc.
Linear Digital & Integrated Circuits Laboratory :
This lab is being used by the students to gain more practical knowledge pertaining to the study of linear integrated circuits including op-amps, regulators and other linear ICs. Equipment like Digital Logic trainer Kit, Linear IC Kit, Linear IC tester kit, Digital IC tester Kit, Digital Simulation Kit, Microprocessor and Microcontroller Kits are available to enhance the interest of the student in the field of Integrated Electronics.
Digital Signal Processing & System Design Laboratory :
The lab has been setup to conduct practical work for the subject Digital Signal Processing. The simulation tools like LAB VIEW and MATLAB with SIMULINK are on hand. Special toolboxes and Block sets for Control Systems, Signal processing, Image processing are also accessible. DSP Starter kit TMS320C50 Based DSP Trainer Kit, LAN Trainer Kit, CDMA DSSS Trainer kit are offered for studying the various Signal Processing techniques.
Microwave Laboratory :
This lab is to conduct practical experiments pertaining to the study of Optical Fiber communication and Microwave engineering using state of the art kits. Equipments like Microwave test benches, VSWR meter, Klystron test benches, Gunn oscillators, Dielectric measurement benches, Fibre Optic Trainer kit, LASER Diode and Glass Fibre based Trainer Kit, Fibre Optic Video link Trainer kit, LED &LD Mounted Source, SICO Advanced Microstrip System with C-Band Source and Detector, Optical Sensors and transmitters are available for ready use.
VLSI Laboratory :
The lab has been setup to prepare the students in the areas of high level HDL design, standard cell design, analog design, architectures and synthesis of VLSI circuits and verification of VLSI designs. This gives a better understanding of the problems faced and the tools used at different stages of VLSI design. These experiments help the students to select a project closer to their field of interest in later stages of their studies.
Research Lab :
This lab has been setup to motivate the students to prepare in hands on designs of real time electronic holds on their mini project session. The same lab is also used for fabrication of student projects. In this Lab along with students working on their final year projects to complete their degree requirements, many pre-final year students also carry out hobby projects to develop and support understanding of class and lab assignments. Projects which have social relevance & current research trends are being pursued by students. Several students have presented their projects in Inter-College Project competitions and Design contests to win many prizes.
Department Library is intended for the faculty as well as students for immediate reference. It has a total number of 2250 Books in the areas of Electronics, Communication, Networks, Signal Processing, VLSI Design, Neural Networks, Fuzzy, Instrumentation and competitive exam books. The department Library also subscribes the international journals (IETE, ISTE, ISA), project reports, magazines and regularly stocks its volumes.
