Department of Bio-Technology

The Department of Biotechnology, one of the vibrant departments of Kalasalingam University (KLU), had its humble beginnings in the year 2002 with its offering of a 4-year undergraduate program in Biotechnology. This young and academically active department has rapidly won many laurels to its credit. In 2004, the department moved to an independent three-storey building which houses its research labs, discipline-specific teaching labs, individual faculty offices and classrooms. In 2006, the department was recognized as a research centre for pursuing doctoral programs.

Infrastructure :

Teaching Laboratories :
Our curriculum insists on sound hands-on training. To conduct practical sessions the department has six independent teaching laboratories housed in the ground and first floors of the biotechnology building.

Animal Cell Culture Lab :
The department also has 1800-sq. ft. research laboratory and a state-of-the-art animal cell-culture facility. The facility has all the necessary equipments needed for culturing animal cells, including an inverted microscope, a laminar air-flow system and a CO2 incubator.

Bioinformatics Center :
The department has a Bioinformatics Center which houses a server and 60 terminals with round-the-clock internet connectivity. The analytical and programming software available at the center include Hex, Chem2pac, Autodock, and NAMD. Students are trained in basic tools and techniques used in computational biology. Frequent training programs are organized by the center for the benefit of the students. This motivates students to take up research projects involving the use of computational techniques for solving biological problems.

Department Library :
There is an independent library and a reading room in the department which caters to the needs of the students and faculty. There are 1200 volumes in its collection in different areas of biotechnology. Students are allowed to visit the library during their library hours and after class hours.
