Department of Physics
The Department of Physics was established in 1964 with spectroscopy and electronics specializations for M.Sc. (Physics) course and with an intake capacity of only 10 students. The number of specializations grew subsequently to the present six and the student intake to 70. The department has always placed equal emphasis both on teaching and research. The number of Ph.D. students produced in the department is approaching 200.

Department of Micro-Biology
The Department of Microbiology established in 2005. The various courses offered in the department are M. Sc., M. Phil., and Ph.D. in microbiology. This subject has been started to make microbiology as an interdisciplinary subject in the sense that a microbiologist must be one who also has knowledge of biochemistry, biostatistics and bioinformatics, so that when the students think of making a career in their chosen field, they must have the basics of these prime subjects to become a competent microbiologist. Shivaji University Started in 1965 and the Marathi Department was established in 3rd March 1979 with one Professor, One Reader and Two Lecturers. Dr. G.M. Powar was the first Professor and Head of the Dept.. He Specialized in Sociology of Marathi Literature and Modern Marathi Literature. Dr. L.R. Nasirabadkar accepted the Headship of the department in 1992 and Continued to there up to 1995. Prof. Dr. Vishwanath Shinde was Head of Department from 1st Sept. 1995 to 2001. Now Prof. Dr. Ravindra Thakur is Head of the Department from 13th Sept. 2001.

Department of Geography
The post graduate department of Geography started functioning in the historic City of Kolhapur from August 22, 1968. At the initial stage the department was established at the behest of the founder Vice – Chancellor Dr. Appasaheb Pawar with one Reader, two lecturers and two demonstrators. Being a part of science faculty the department trains students for the Master Degree both in the Arts and the Science streams. The Department of Food Science and Technology was established in June 2007 in the university as self supporting department. Its primary objective was to produce competent food scientists and technologists who can take leading roles in improving the socio-economic status of regional people. The department of Education was established on 7th of November 1979 and the building in which it is housed is named after the renowned educationist Padmabhushan Dr J P Naik. The Department went full swing after the grant of the Special Assistance Programme of the UGC under Departmental Research Support in March, 1995.
