The Department of Sociology, Dibrugarh University was started in 1967. The introduction of Sociology at Post-Graduate level in Dibrugarh University has created a new chapter in the growth and development of Sociology in the North-Eastern Region of India. The course curriculum of the Department at M.A.(CBCS),M.S.W.(Semester) andPh.D/ M.Phil (Semester) levels has been prepared keeping in view the manpower requirements in various industrial organizations and departments of both public and private sectors. Moreover, the Department has been providing specialized manpower at various capacity to Oil, Coal, Plantation and Power Industries besides various government departments such as State Administrative Services, State Police and Prison Services, State Economic Services, Town Planning, Health and Family Welfare, Social Welfare and Probation etc., besides providing teachers in Sociology for Under Graduate Colleges and Higher Secondary Schools of the region. Of late, under the roof of the Department of Sociology “The Centre for Social Work” has been established from the 2010-11 academic Session for teaching Post Graduate semester course in Master of Social Work (MSW). The Department has been publishing “The North Eastern Research Bulletin” an ISSN marked Referred Journal since 1970.
