Department of Education

The Department of Education, one of the oldest departments of Dibrugarh University, started functioning with effect from 20th September 1965. It started with a teacher-training course called Bachelor of Teaching (B.T). Till 1968 the Department was known as the ‘Instituteof Education’ and from 1968 it came to be known as the Department of Education with the same B.T. course. At present the B.T. course is renamed as the B.Ed course with effect from 1981-82 session. Initially the B.T. Classes were held in Monohari Devi Kanoi Girls’ College and later on it was shifted to D.H.S.K. Commerce College building, where the University started functioning since 1st July 1965. In 1969, the Department was shifted to Rajabheta Campus, where it was housed in a temporary building. Initially the ‘Institute of Education’ started functioning under a Principal and from this time onward the Department started functioning under a ‘Reader’ as its Head, the post of the ‘Principal’ being abolished from 25.06.1669. In 1987 the Science stream in the B. Ed course was opened up adding a new feather to the Department. The Department was raised to the status of “Collegeof Teacher Education” (CTE) from 1st September, 1989.
Till 1989, the Department had the total intake capacity of 60 students, of which 40 were deputed by the Govt. of Assam and the rest 20 students were selected on merit. At present in the B. Ed course, there are 90 seats – 40 deputed teachers and 50 fresh students. Thus this Department has been playing all these years a vital role in the field of teacher-education.

With due approval of the University authorities, the M. Ed Course was introduced from 1st September 1989, with an intake capacity of 10 students. This professional course in Education has been training for the past nineteen years college teachers, officers employed in the education departments of Govt. of Assam, people with B. Ed degrees.

The Department of Education could not turn a blind eye to the heavy pressure put on it by the graduates with Major in Education of the various colleges under the Dibrugarh University for opening a two-year course in M.A. in Education. After a good deal of effort on the part of the members of the teaching staff, the University authorities opened the M.A. course in Education from the session 1992-93, with twenty students in the previous class.
