The department of Economics, established in 1967, has been committed towards creating, assimilating and disseminating knowledge through teaching, research and extension services and developing human resources in the field of Economics. The course structure of the department incorporates a balance of theoretical analysis and quantitative reasoning. At present the Department has M. Phil, Ph.D., Post Graduate Masters and two post graduate diploma programmes. The department Introduced Choice based credit base system in the examination system from 2009.Present Faculty Position of the department is as follows
UGC Emeritus Fellow-1, Professor-1, Reader- 1, Assistant Professor - 5, Lecturer (on contract)-2 (in lieu of vacant posts), Project Fellow-2.
The department has following kind of Facilities & Assets:
Own building with independent sitting room for each teacher, (b) One Documentation Centre, (c) One well- equipped Conference room , (d) One AC computer Lab with LAN facilities,
The department has been constantly organizing coferences, workshops and seminars and conducting several major sponsored research projects including the UGC’s Special Assistance Programme.The Department publishes annually one research journal entitled “Assam Economic Journal” having ISSN No. Each teacher has the membership of the several professional bodies. The department has completed 8 Major Projects and 5 Minor Projects .Total no of Ph. D. produced since inception is 86, and No. of students so far passed UGC NET/SLET is 36. The Department has Teaching Programme Collaborations with all the Universities of the North-East in addition to the Universities of North Bengal, Kolkota, Viswa Varati, Berhampur and Bhubaneswar. Apart form this the department is engaged in Outreach Activities like Organizing Awareness Generation Programme (AGP) in neighboring villages of Dibrugarh town and tea gardens on health care, sanitation, hygiene, and literacy and consumer rights. It also renders counseling services to its students on a continuous basis in the area of NET, Provincial Civil Services, Bank Officers and other professional areas.

The department is planning to open two more optional papers in M.A. programme on Regional Economics and Economies of rural development .It is also planning to open a centre on border studies in near future.
