The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences was established at Dibrugarh University in 1983 to introduce the four year integrated Bachelor degree course in Pharmacy (B.Pharm.) with the purpose of providing trained technical man power in the field of pharmacy primarily for the North Eastern States of India. The initial financial assistance came from the North Eastern Council (NEC), Shillong and the participating states are Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura. At Present the annual intake of student is forty of which seven (7) seats are reserved for students of Assam and twelve (12) seats are reserved for other six participating states with two (2) seats for each state. The remaining 21 seats are under endowment category. The recurring expenditure is borne by respective states on pro-rata basis.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dibrugarh University is the first institution in the entire North Eastern region of India to offer B. Pharm. degree programme and approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi and Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) from its inception.
The primary objective of the department is to provide quality education to train future pharmaceutical professionals to serve the North Eastern States in particular and the country in general. The department envisage to become the nodal center for the development of Pharmaceutical Sciences in north east India by channeling the Research and Development activities to tap the enormous natural Pharmaceutical potential of this region hitherto remain unexplored. In this direction, to initiate R&D activities, the department has pioneered to introduce the post graduate programme in Pharmacy (M.Pharm). The department offers M. Pharm degrees in three specializations viz., Pharmaceutics, Pharmacognosy and Pharmaceutical Chemistry. The courses are duly approved by the AICTE. The department is also in the process of introduction of Post Graduate programme in other specializations. The Department is equipped with equipments like UV-VIS spectrophotometer, FTIR Spectrometer, HPTLC, HPLC (Gradient and Isocratic), DSC, Gas Chromatograph, Lyophiliser, Low temp. Storage facility, Phase contrast Trinocular Microscope, 10 Station compression Machine, Rat Tail Blood pressure measurement Instrument etc. The faculties are engaged in funded research projects exploring and trying to tap the vast pharmaceutical potential of this region. The Drug Discovery projects uses various SOFTWARES designed for QSAR studies as well as Molecular modeling for theoretical identification of bioactive molecules. A huge infusion of current knowledge is necessary to maintain the growth of this department which is successful in producing quality pharmaceutical graduates who could be seen in any Pharmaceutical sector of the country.

In this backdrop, the Department is ready to collaborate with any Pharmaceutical Institution of higher learning which may be beneficial for both sides which will fulfill the high expectation of modern Pharmaceutical Industries of India for quality output from this region. This initiation may also help the faculties and post graduate students besides research scholars and may facilitate the upcoming Pharmaceutical sectors in this region to become an example of Industry-Institute interaction. The department is unique in India as it is situated in the 3rd biggest biodiversity hot spot of the world and trying to direct its research to harness the hitherto unexplored pharmaceutical potential of this hot spot.
