Department of Sociology The department of Sociology, a pioneering endeavour in the eastern region of India, started its journey as early as in 1964, with a subsidiary course at graduate level. A couple of years later, a post-graduate course in Sociology was introduced and the graduate (honours) course followed soon. Department of History
Department of History The department of History was established in 1978 with three whole-time teachers in a small corner of the composite building. It started its journey with a 2-year post graduate course, drawing students mainly from the graduates of other universities. At present, there are more than 30 colleges, affiliated to our University, where honours course of History is taught and these colleges ultimately feed their students to us.

Department of English
Department of English The department started with 4 teachers and 30 students in 1960 with a PG course only. BA honours and sunsidiary courses were introduced in 1972 and M.Phil (the first in the university) in 1985. At present the department has 13 teachers and 223 students apart from 17 Ph.D. scholars. 15 scholars have been awared Ph.D. till date. The department has increased the intake at the PG level to 100 from 2002 and has phased out the BA course as several undergraduate colleges have recently become affiliated to the university. Department of Physiology
Department of Physiology The Department of Physiology, University of Kalyani was established in October, 2005. Two-years Master of Science ( MSc.) course in Physiology started with a batch of 10 students from the academic session 2005 – 2006 and the first batch of MSc. students passed out in 2007. The Department of Physiology also offers Ph.D. programme in Physiology since 2007. At present the Department of Physiology is housed in the premises of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Department will be shifted to its own premises very shortly.

Department of Physics The Department of Physics was established in 1961. In the first year, teaching was confined to the students of the Agriculture Department. Undergraduate Honours course teaching started in 1962 and the first graduates came out in 1965. The first batch of M.Sc. students also passed out in 1965. The Department initially operated from various other buildings. It moved into its own building at the present location in 1969-70. Since then the original building has undergone some extensions - the last one being in the mid eighties.
