The Department of Mathematics was established as an Under Graduate Department in 1963 and upgraded to Post Graduate department in 1966. Initially the Department was started with only three faculty members: Prof. B. K. Lahiri (Retd.), Late Prof. P. R. Sengupta and Prof. R. N. Jana (Retd.). Today the Department has a total number of eighteen sanctioned teaching posts. In the Department two parallel streams are running: The Applied mathematics Stream and the Pure mathematics Stream. Total student intake per year is eighty. Special Assistance Programme (DRS-I) awarded by the UGC for five years from 2009.
