Department of History
The department of History was established in 1978 with three whole-time teachers in a small corner of the composite building. It started its journey with a 2-year post graduate course, drawing students mainly from the graduates of other universities.
At present, there are more than 30 colleges, affiliated to our University, where honours course of History is taught and these colleges ultimately feed their students to us.
The uniqueness of the post-graduate syllabus of the department lies in having a full paper on 'HISTORIOGRAPHY' and special papers on 'Women Studies', 'Science & Technology', 'Environment & Ecology' etc. A workshop of college teachers affiliated to our university has been organized in January, 2004 by our department on new UGC guidelines for undergraduate syllabus in History.
The Department has its own research programmes with varied thrust areas ranging from women's history to environmental history, apart from the individual research projects of its teachers at national and international level. Two such projects, sponsored by the NISTAS and the INSA are now going on. Till date, ten (10) Ph.D. programmes have been successfully completed and the research students have been awarded Ph.D. degrees.
