Department of Physics

The Department of Physics was established in 1961. In the first year, teaching was confined to the students of the Agriculture Department. Undergraduate Honours course teaching started in 1962 and the first graduates came out in 1965. The first batch of M.Sc. students also passed out in 1965.
The Department initially operated from various other buildings. It moved into its own building at the present location in 1969-70. Since then the original building has undergone some extensions - the last one being in the mid eighties.
The Department initially started with only two full time permanent teachers. Up to the end of the sixties, there were only a handful to teachers. The number of teachers increased substantially in the seventies. The number of sanctioned faculty posts became a stable 19 in the early eighties. Currently, 10 of these 19 positions are vacant.

Research work started in the Department from the early seventies and the first Ph.D. was awarded in 1976. Till date 50 students have received their Ph.D. degrees from this Department. Teachers of this Department have all been actively engaged in research regardless of whether they have graduate students or not.
Professor D.P. Ray Chaudhuri, a renowned teacher, was the first Professor and Head of the Department. He retired in 1967. After him there were no Professor as Head of the Department till 1970 when Prof. D.C. Sarkar came from Alligarh to join as Professor and Head of the Department. Since 1980, the Headship has become rotational between the Professors and the Readers of the Department with a term of two years.
