Critically analysing the canon of ancient and modern Tamil literature in literary, sociological, psychological and feministic perspectives, constructing the literary concept in Tamil and comparative study of Tamil with other pan-Indian literatures are a few of the objectives of the Department of Tamil Literature. Compilation of reference works such as Literary encyclopaedias, Compendium of Cankam Literature, undertaking of intra-mural, state-sponsored and UGC funded projects, conduct of Refresher Courses, Symposia, Seminar etc with the financial assistance of state as well as central governments, organising a number of Endowment Lectures and administering the academic programmes leading to M.A., M.Phil and Ph.D. Degrees.
