Established to undertake the study of the Language, Culture, socio-economic conditions and environs of about six ancient tribes in and around Ootacamund in Nilgris District of Southern India. Objectives of the centre include the study of linguistic and anthropological significance of these primitive tribes. Evaluation studies of various tribal projects and welfare schemes, ethnographic profile of tribal communities, investigation of bio-medical and health problems, recording of cultural habits and collection of artifacts are the other chief aims of this Tribal Centre.

=> To evaluate the impact of the government schemes on the tribal communities and assisting government initiatives
=> To conduct anthropological, linguistic and other aspects of folklore studies, associated with the tribal groups in Tamil Nadu.
=> To organize seminars and trainings programs related to tribal studies
=> To prepare updated ethnographic profile on all tribal communities.
=> To establish a tribal museum
=> To investigate Bio-anthropological and Medical anthropological aspects of tribal groups and their bearing on health and disease problems.
=> To record useful ethno medical and ethno biological information on Tamilnadu tribes.
=> To collect and preserve valuable material cultures of tribal communities as reflected in the tribal artifacts used by them.
=> The department has organized many seminars, workshops and refresher courses
=> The faculty members of the department have completed many research projects
=> The faculty members have published many books
