The Department was established in the year 1967 with the objective of offering service courses in the discipline of Mechanical Engineering to the B Tech. and M. Tech. students of Agricultural Engineering and to cater the need of specialists in the areas of Thermal Environmental Engineering and Machine Design of various R & D Organizations, Teaching and Research institutions, Industries etc. M.Tech programme in the Thermal Environmental Engineering and Machine Design areas were started in the years 1972 and 1984 respectively. Ph. D programme in the Thermal area was started during the year 1991-92. The Department teaches 9 courses of total 26 cr. hrs. to undergraduate students of Agril. Engg. The courses include thermodynamics & heat transfer, fluid mechanics, thermal energy conversion systems, engineering graphics, machine drawing machine design, entrepreneurship, workshop technology etc. The Department has done commendable work in the areas of Solar Energy, Noise & Vibration and Greenhouse Technology. Many solar devices such as Solar Cookers, Solar Dryers, Solar air heaters, Solar Ovens have been developed in the thermal area. Work has also been done for the development of low cost heating and cooling technologies for green houses, optimization of greenhouse space for nursery raising applications and micro-climatic modification of greenhouses for summer and winter use. The department exhibits various solar gadgets and provides greenhouse design and microclimatic control related information to the farmers during Kisan Melas.
