Department of Botany
The Department of Botany came into existence in 1972. The major activities of the department are teaching, research and extension, and it offers courses for M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes. The curriculum provides the postgraduate students with comprehensive overview of the theoretical aspects and practical skills enabling them to enter into extensive range of jobs. The department trains students in Plant Physiology, Anatomy and Biosystematics, for which specialized facilities exist for both degree programmes (M.Sc. & Ph.D. ). Theory courses and thesis work are mandatory, aimed at strong research and experimentation grounding in areas of crop physiology, seed physiology, plant anatomy, taxonomy, biosystematics, tissue culture, histochemistry, ultrastructure, reproductive physiology, stress physiology and molecular biology. The meritorious students are provided fellowships, both at M.Sc. & Ph.D. levels. The contributions in basic and applied research made by the departmental faculty over the years have been honoured with various prestigious awards including FNA, FNASc, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Memorial, Professor Gunner Erdtman, Professor Hira Lal Chakravarty, Hari Ohm Ashram, INSA Young Scientist and AAAS awards.
