Department of Human Development

Department of Human development (established as Child Development) came into existence in 1975 with the introduction of postgraduate programme in child development. All India Co-ordinated Research Project in Home Science (Child Development) further strengthened this department in 1980. This project is still going on after 28 years of successful completion of four phases of all India programme. At present faculty strength is 14 with 2 Professors, 9 Associate Professors and 3 Assistant Professors. Ph.D programme in Human Development was initiated in 1998.

Till date 117 students have obtained Master’s degree and 13 students have obtained Ph.D degree from this department. In 2003, the department introduced one year Diploma in Management of Creche and Nursery School. A three-month certificate course in Child Care has been introduced from August 2008.

Besides teaching B.Sc.(Hons.), M.Sc and Ph.D programmes, the faculty is actively involved in research and extension activities in Human Development. Several research projects have been completed in the last 33 years. A total number of 10 books, 8 teaching manuals, 8 technical bulletins and 4 research bulletins have been published by the faculty members. A total number of 270 research papers have been published by the teachers in the national and international journals. All the teachers, research fellows and P.G. students very actively participate in the activities of professional societies and associations. In 1995, the department organized a national seminar on Early Childhood Care and Education in collaboration with the Indian Association for Pre-School Education, which was attended by about 300 delegates mainly women from all parts of the country. An international symposium on ‘Health for All’ was organized in 1996 in collaboration with Indian Association of Sports Scientists & Physical Educationists and Indian Association of Maternal and Child Health, which was attended by delegated not only from all over India but also from U.S.A., Europe and several Asian countries.

A very popular Laboratory Nursery School is functioning in the Department for the last 38 years. A Laboratory Day Care Centre started functioning in the department since 1998. These two laboratories have strengthened the instruction and research in Early Childhood Care, Education and Development, besides providing care of children and thus assisting working mothers.
