The Department of Plant Science was established in 2011 in the transit Science campus at Padennakkad. Prof.( Dr.) G.M. Nair, the former Director of the prestigious Tropical Botanical Garden Research Institute (TBGRI), Thiruvananthapuram, INDIA and former Professor & Head, Departments of Botany and Biotechnology, University of Kerala, headed the Department since its inception till November, 2013. With his efforts, the Department of Plant Science features latest laboratory facilities to do productive research and laboratory experiments for the PG Students.
The Department of Plant Science aims at teaching and research in the areas of the plant biology, taking the students to the most basic fundamentals to the latest novel research based on a nationally relevant curriculum.
The research interest of the faculty includes both basic sciences as well as application-oriented research. Besides the conventional subjects of Plant Science, the department covers teaching and research in the areas of molecular biology, genetics, development, evolution and ecology. At this early stage itself, the faculty of Plant Science have received funding worth ₹1.3 crores from various sources like DST and SERB.
