Department of Commerce
In the silver jubilee year (1940)of the University, the Department of Commerce was set-up as an adjunct to the Economics Department. Ten years later, it acquired the status of an independent Department and further on the eve of the Golden jubilee of the University (1965), it was raised to the status of separate Faculty. In 1968-69, management course was started in this Faculty. In the Diamond jubilee year (1975), the Faculty was renamed as the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies with two separate departments in it. In 1984, the two departments were made two separate Faculties, viz., Faculty of Commerce and Faculty of Managment Studies.
The Faculty of Commerce offers courses leading to B.Com. (Hons), M.Com. and Ph.D.degrees. Of late (1999-2000) the Faculty , keeping in view the needs of the business, started a special course, Master of Finance and Control (M.F.C.) on self financing basis. These courses are run in the Faculty on the patern of co-education. The Faculty draws students for its different courses not only from different parts of the country, but also from other countreis, such as, Jordan, Iran, Kenya, Thailand, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, etc. At present, about 1,000 students are studying in various courses of which there are about 35-40 % girl students.
Presently, the Faculty comprises 33 Faculty members and more than one and a halfdozen non-teaching staff. The Faculty has also a Computer Lab, a Department Library, a Commerce Association Library, a Seminar Hall, a mini-auditorium and a hostel.
The Faculty has a team of well qualified and experienced teaching staff. All except four are Ph.Ds. Two of them are also D.Litt. They have produced abuot 250 Ph.Ds. and completed a number of research projects and about half of a dozen major and minor research projects are in progress. They published a large number of research papers. They have also presented papers in a largenumber of national and international seminars/conferences. The Faculty has also organized a number of national and international seminars and conferences, including three All India Commerce Conferences.
With a long and rich experience the Faculty is now equiped for meeting the challenges of the present and the need of the future.
