Department of English

he Department of English was established with the inception of the Banaras Hindu University in 1916. It is a large Department in the university. ‘Indian Literature in English and Post Colonial Literatures’ are the focal areas of research and training. The Department has been publishing regularly a research journal ‘Criticism and Research’ since 1964. At the postgraduate level in the final semester, optional papers such as Indian Literature in Translation, New Literatures in English, Women Writing, and European Literature in Translation are offered to the students. The Department organizes three annual memorial lectures – The Nag, Purohit Swami and Vikramaditya Rai Memorial Lectures. Eminent scholars are invited to deliver these memorial lectures on various modern aspects of English literature. The Department organizes seminars regularly.

The Department of English, one of the major department of Banaras Hindu University, came into existence with the very inception of this seat of learning in 1916. The formative years of the Department were shaped by a galaxy of scholars like Joygopal Banerjee, Ronald Nixon, P. Sheshadry and U.C. Nag among others. Its scholastic traditions were farther strengthened by C. N Menon, B. L. Sahney. R. A. Diwedi, N M Kulkarni, V Rai. T. N. Singh, U. P. Mathur, S. M. Pandeya, G.B. Mohan Thampi, and R R Mehrotra,who had distinguished themselves in various spheres of English students.

This department has been fortunate in respect of the visits of creative writers academic stalwarts of international repute. Some prominent figures among them include I. A. Richards, Somerset Maugham, Stephen Spender William Golding, Angus Wilson. Margaret Drabble, Norman Holand, Bruce King, Michael Horlando Michel Pousse and Michael Franklin. Among Indian creative writers who have delivered lectures in the department, mention maybe made of Raja Rao, Mulk Rai Anwnd, Nissim Ezekiel Jayanta Mahapatra, Keki N. Daruwalla, Chaman Nahal, Shiv K. Kumar, Amitava Ghosh, Saro Cowasjee, U. R. Ananthamurthy, A. K Mehrotra and Eunice Desoza. The department has been organizing three Memorial Lectures - Dr V Rai Memorial Lecture, Dr. U C .Nag Memorial Lectures and Shri Parohit Swaimi Memorial Lecture for ver several decades and the prominent guest speakers on these events includes Amalendu Bose, CD Narsimhaiah, S. Nagrajan, M K Naik, Sarup singh, R W Desai, G N Devy, Vinod Sena, R. K. Kaul, A. A. .Ansari, Meenakshi Mukherjee, M. L. Rama, Harish Trivedi, K Schidanand and Amitav Roy.
