Panjab University is one of the oldest universities in India. The university campus is located in the city of Chandigarh and is spread over an area of 550 acres in sectors 14 and 25 of the city.

The University has 46 teaching and research departments and 10 Centers/Chairs for teaching and research at the main campus located at Chandigarh. It has 172 affiliated colleges spread over Punjab, Haryana,Himachal Pradesh and and Chandigarh, Regional Centers at Muktsar, Ludhiana, Hoshiarpur and Swami Sarvanand Giri Regional Centre Hoshiarpur.

The Panjab University was established at Lahore in 1882 as the fourth teaching and affiliating University in South Asia under the British Raj (after the universities of Calcutta , Bombay, and Madras). Following the Partition of India, Lahore became a part of Pakistan and the Indian twin of the University was constrained to function for almost a decade without having a campus of its own. The administrative office was located at Solan and the teaching departments functioned from Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Delhi and Amritsar. Panjab University was relocated to Chandigarh in 1956, and currently enjoys the status of being one of the most reputed universities in India.

The Students' Council is body that consists of the departmental representatives and other office bearers i.e. President, Vice-President, Secretary and Joint-Secretary directly elected by the students from the various teaching departments on the campus every year. The Dean Student Welfare is ex-officio Chairman of the Council. The Students' Council organises youth festivals, both national and international, academic debates, literary and cultural events and educational tours, besides looking after the interests of the Students in General.
