At a time of rapid transition in the field of literary and cultural studies, the department of English is intent upon sustaining the offerings of traditional historical periods while elaborating those in diverse world literatures, and engaging fully with the spectrum of current theoretical concerns. The department structures its academic programs historically, a practice that has readily accommodated changes that reflect the development of English studies as a discipline and the evolving mission of the university. Members of the department bring their interdisciplinary interests to their English courses, addressing such areas as the relationship between English Literature and literature in other languages; literature and other arts, sciences, history and philosophy; nature of literary language. The focus is on critical reading, analytical reasoning, and lucid writing is central to the mission of the Department, while our large and distinguished faculty makes us one of the strongest and most diverse departments on campus. The Curriculum is benchmarked against global standards and the department uses International pedagogy involving experimental learning and use of e-journals. Seminars are given by students which help in developing their skills in effective expression and public speaking. Students of literature are encouraged to give regular presentations & interactive sessions on critical theories etc. and are expected to do an extensive survey of Literature for developing their research skills, better perspective and analysis of a work of art.
