Biotechnology is the use of living organisms to develop products, to make or modify products or processes for specific use. Biotechnology has been used by human beings since thousand of years in agriculture, food production, and medicine.
Industrial biotechnology is use of biotechnology for industrial purposes like industrial fermentation. It uses microorganisms, or enzymes, to generate industrially useful products in following fields such as chemicals, food and feed, detergents, paper and pulp, textiles and biofuels.
In medicine biotechnology is applied in areas such as pharmaceutical drug discovery and production, pharmacogenomics, and genetic testing. Genetically modified crops ("GM crops", or "biotech crops") are plants used in agriculture with modified DNA which are pest resistant and have high yield with better grain quality.
