The Department of Crop Physiology made a humble start in 1948 with the setting up to Crop Physiology Section at Lucknow as a small research unit under the Department of Agriculture, Uttar Pradesh. The Section was transferred to Kanpur in year 1963. After the establishment of the erstwhile U.P. Institute of Agricultural Science at Kanpur, it was upgraded, as well as recognized, in March 1971, and the recent Biochemistry unit was merged in it, thereby setting up the Division of plant Physiology and Biochemistry. At this stage, the Division took upon itself all the three functions of research, teaching and extension, In its own field. A separate course of Plant Physiology was, accordingly, introduced at the M.Sc.(Ag.) level thereby making a start of postgraduate teaching in the subject, Facilities existed in the Division for research leading to Ph.D. degree in the subject with the merger of the institute into the Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, at Kanpur in 1985, the Division became an integral part of the university. A separate Department of Agricultural Biochemistry was established and the biochemistry component was transferred to it. The Department of Crop Physiology is functioning as on of the department of the College of Agriculture at this University.
