The department of Agricultural Economics and Statistics is one of the leading department of the university which was created in the year 1948 (formerly known as Agriculture College, Kanpur). Since then it has been actively engaged in teaching, research and extension activities. The management studies sponsored by the directorate of Economics and Statistics, Govt. of India, were conducted for U.P. state by this department from the year 1954-57. An economic evaluation of SFDA in UP sponsored by ICAR was also carried out by this department during the year 1976-78.
The department also imparts teaching in bachelor degree programme under college of Agriculture, college of Home Science, Forestry and Horticulture and Teaching post graduate and Ph.D programmes in the department. All the teaching techniques adopted to teach graduate post graduate Ph.D students. During last thirty five years more than 70 students were awarded Ph.D degree 300 students got M.Sc.(Ag.) degree from the department. A direct link between the students and farmers is done through RAW E Programme of the department. Department engaged with nine courses (23 credits) for Bachelor teaching, 12 courses (28 credits) + 21 credit (thesis + seminar for post graduate teaching) and six courses (18 credit) for Ph.D programmes.
The research activities of the department consisted of Farm production analysis. Farm business analysis of different district and economic system of storage of Paddy, Wheat, and Sugarcane at farm and market level. A study of income and consumption pattern of different categories population, cost and return analysis of important crops, structure and flow of institutional credit and An enquiry into the marketing cost of pulses, oilseeds and other important crops, constrains to Agricultural production in different districts. Recently the dept. has been under taken same new areas of research like, the impact of urbanization in rural areas, the study on MNREGA programmes, production, economics & marketing on vegetables crops, economics of Eri-silk production, economy of small tea growers and growth trend analysis of turmeric, onion and garlic crops, price behaviour analysis of market.
