Department of Statistics

The Department of Statistics was established in the year 1968, starting with B.Sc (Hons) course in Statistics. M.Sc. course was offered from the year 1969. Late Prof. R. R. Umarji, M.Sc. A.M. (Columbia), F.S.S. (London) was the founder Professor and was instrumental in building up the department. The department was located at the Central College, Bangalore and in 1981 it was shifted to the Jnana Bharathi Campus. At present the department is equipped with a Department library consisting of the donated books and books procured under the SC/ST cell of the university. The FIST supported computer Laboratory and the library was established in the year 2006. Prof. K.P.Srinath, Prof. N. G. N. Prasad, Prof. T. Srivenkataramana, Prof. H. J. Vaman and Prof. S. M. Manjunath have worked for the great progress of the department in the multidisciplinary activites, with special emphasis on teaching and research. The goals and objectives of the Department are to impart quality education to those seeking admission to its M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes, promote both theoretical and applied research and publications, develop interaction with Statistical Organisations, R&D Establishments, Industries and other Organisations. The course provides opportunity to develop skills for the data analysis using modern computing facilities and the curriculum based project work enables the students to get both the field experience as well as the exposure in the applied areas of Statistics.
