The Department of studies in Sanskrit was started in the year 1968 with M.A. course. Eminent Professor and Scholars namely Prof. K T Pandurangi, M.A, Krishnaswamy, Dr. Sivakumara Swamy, M.A., Lakshmitatachar and Prof. Prahladachar served department for several years. Prof. M.S Bhavani is presently heading the department, and now the total strength of the teaching staff in the department is five, comprised of two professor, one Reader, one selection grade lecturer and one senior lecturer. Most of the members of the staff have been Doctoral degree holders and have been guiding Ph.D candidates. Prof. K.T. Pandurangi The first Head of the department is a winnerof both state & National awards. Even at theage of 90, he is academically more active.At present he is the director of Dvaita VedantaStudies and Research foundation at Bangalore.Two scholars have taken Ph.D. under his guidance. Prof. M. Sivakumaraswamy Professor & Head of the Dept. for nearly 15 years, under whose guidance nearly 18 students obtained Ph.D., degree. He is a recepient of 'The Certificate of Honour' from the President of India.Vid. Prof. D. Prahladachar Professor & Head of the Dept. for several years & Later became the Vice-Chancellor of Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, Tirupati. He is also a recepient of 'The Certificate of Honour' from the President of India| DSOC|From a humble beginning in 1965 with hardly a dozen students on its rolls and a couple of teachers drawn from the directorate of collegiate education, the department has grown in both quality and numbers. With the introduction of B A (Hons.) in sociology, the department witnessed a major expansion in the late sixties and early seventies. It was during that period too that the department had an exchange programme with the Ford Foundation, and the United States' Educational Foundation in India (USEFI). The department was one of the very few to be identified for the introduction of faculty improvement programme (FIP) by the UGC in the late seventies. In recognition of the outstanding work done by the department for over two decades the department was accorded special assistance by UGC in 1988, the first sociology department to be given the status in south India.
