The Department of Environmental Science of Bangalore University was established in 1992 to mainstream the scientific methods and technologies related to Environmental Studies in the main curricula of the University. Since its establishment, the Department of Environmental Science has been primarily charged to implement a number of academic programs as per the curriculum developed by the Department as well as executing a number of funded research project, Interdisciplinary training and connected academic achievements, consultancy projects, organizing seminars, workshops, invited lectures, etc. to uplift the standard of performance of Department and to prepare it for meeting the impending opportunities and challenges ahead. Primary mission of the Department of Environmental Sciences is to impart environmental knowledge to students and develop research and evaluation programmes. Besides, several funded project works have been completed in the last many years. Towards this end, the laboratory of the department has been provided with infrastructure facilities to meet the requirement of water, air, soil and biological sample analysis. The Environmental Science laboratory of Bangalore University is recognized under EPA, 1986 way back in 2002. Following this, the department is getting samples from various public and private undertakings, Govt. agencies, etc. Standards protocols for the analysis of the samples have been developed. Two international collaborative programmes have been undertaken, one with Griffith University, Australia and the other one with University of Venice, Italy. Curriculum development is one of the objectives of collaboration with Griffith University. Students are exposed to a host of fields such as Environmental Biology, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Pollution, Biostatistics, Waste Management, Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Toxicology, Remote Sensing and its applications, Geographic Information System, Natural Resource Management and Biodiversity, Disaster Management, Environmental Engineering, Energy and Conservation, Environmental Geology, and Basics of Computer Applications during their course. This has enabled them to emerge as eligible graduates with comprehensive analytical bent of mind to take up a challenging task. Taking into consideration the multi-disciplinary nature of the course, the Department of Environmental Science also uses the expertise of faculties not only from the sister Departments of Bangalore University but also from leading institutions in the city.
