With a view to promote the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in various branches of learning, this University will foster and promote higher education with special emphasis on the study of indigenous languages as well as culture and rural development. On 30th June, 1885, Sidho Murmu and his brother Kanho, two great Santal rebel leaders mobilized ten thousand Santals in an uprising against British imperialist power and their Indian subordinates. The movement was brutally suppressed by the British, but it had left an indelible mark in the history of anti-British nationalist movement and also forced to initiate change in the colonizers’ policy against the colonized. The day is still celebrated among the Santal community with great respect and spirit for the thousands of the Santal martyrs who sacrificed their lives along with their two celebrated leaders to win freedom from the clutch of British rulers.
