Writing half, quarter, three-quarters and one and a quarter in decimal form

‘Half’ is usually written as 12. To convert this fraction into decimal form, the denominator of 12 must be converted into an equivalent fraction with denominator 10.

12=1×52×5=510 so the decimal form of 12 will be 510 or 0.5 Just as 12=1×52×5=510 = 0.5, note that 12=1×502×50=50100 = 0.50

Therefore, ‘half’ is written as ‘0.5’ or 0.50’. ‘Quarter’ and ‘three quarters’ are written in fractions as 14 and 34 respectively. Let us convert them into decimal fractions. 10 is not divisible by 4. Therefore, the denominators of 14 and 34 cannot be made into fractions with multiples of 10. However, 4 × 25 = 100, so the denominator can be 100.

A quarter =14=1×254×25=25100=0.25
and Three quarters =34=3×254×25=75100=0.75
One and a quarter = 1 14 = 1.25
One and a half = 1 12 = 1.50 = 1.5
One and three quarters = 1 34 = 1.75
Seventeen and a half = 17 12 = 17.50 = 17.5
