The Department of Anthropology was formed in the year 1991 during the 8 th Five Year Plan period following the bifurcation of the combined department of Anthropology and Sociology. The subject Anthropology and Sociology was introduced under the Sambalpur University during the 5th Five Year Plan (in the year 1976). Every year the deparment admits 16 post-graduate and 6 M.Phil students. The faculty members give personal guidance to students individually both in teaching as well as research. The thrust areas of research of the department are: tribal studies, weaker sections and their development, and children and childhood covering both social and biological dimensions.
