Founded in 1949, a Special Assistance Programme was accredited to the Department during the VIth plan. The department offers specialization in modern and medieval Indian History. Researches encompass the socio-economic history of western India with special emphasis on the process of urbanization. Besides this society and culture are also important areas of study. The under graduate and post graduate courses designed clearly reflects the direction, in which the department is growing. The Department has a large collection of documents in Modi acquired from the prominent banking houses; the Haribhakti and Shamal Bechar. Besides these there are numerous other documents and sources pertaining to the 19th and 20th Century. The Department is working towards developing an archival cell for the same.
