Though modest yet a formal effort began with the setting up of Institute of Tribal Studies (ITS) at the Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla vide University’s Executive Council’s Resolution No. 10, dated January 31, 1994.

    The Institute has an excellent e-library that serves as a knowledge resource to the need of the teachers and students.
    Sports facilities are available in the campus. Annual Sports event is held in the month of December in every year

    Computer Centre in the Himachal Pradesh University was established in 1986 with initial financial support of the University Grants Commission. Spread over an area of about 3000 sq. feet, the Computer Centre started functioning with a 68010 based Super Micro 32 with just five terminals. Now it is equiped with latest hardwares like Compaq Servers and Pentium based nodes and latest software. It offers computing facilities to students of dept. of computer science as well as to students of other departments. It provides consultancy to various departments as and when required
    In 1987, the Computer Centre developed a Comprehensive software for the payroll process for the teachers and officers of the University. This included the preparation of the salary slips, the various redrawal statements and the Bank statements. In 1991, the software was updated to handle the payrolls of all the employees of the university. The work is still being done in the Computer Centre and now the software has been updated and designed more user friendly and it is proposed to shift it to the Accounts Branch itself.
    The Computer Centre developed the software to generate the income tax statement which accompanies the Form-16 for IT returns.
    A budget management software was developed for the Academic Staff College of the University.
    Programs for preparation of nominal rolls for the budget wing were also developed.
    A circulation system had been developed for the library the Academic Staff College.
    A software frame work has been designed for the Recruitment branch of the university for preparation of the interview charts for selection committees.
    The Computer Centre has also page setted the Annual Reports of the University for the year 1992 93.
    The Computer Centre has also page setted the Handbook of information for admission and Competitive examinations for the last four years.
    A comprehensive, user friendly software has been developed for the acquisition of books in the library.
    The Computer Centre has planned, designed and supervised the computerisation of the records of books, periodicals and thesis and dissertations in the university library under the INFLIBNET project.
    Has developed a small software for overdue books management for the university library.
    The computer Centre has developed numerous programs for the analysis of data for Research Scholars as per their reuirements. However, with the acuisition of SPSS, the programming effort required has substantially reduced.
    The Computer Centre is also studying the system of the Fee Counter for which it plans to develop a software package.
    With the gradually growing basic infrastructure, trained manpower and computing facilities of the Computer Centre, the Department of Computer Science was started in 1987 which launched the Certificate Course in Computer Programming and the Diploma in Computer Application in 1988. Subsequently in 1990, the Master in Computer Applications course was awarded to the Himachal Pradesh by the UGC. With this, the workload of Computer Centre increased manifold. The students of MCA and DCA have been immensly benefited from their experience of working on the latest technology which has been extremely helpful in getting them very good job placements in the industry
    To spread Computer awareness among the teachers of the affiliated college, a module of 3 4 days was incorporated in all the Orientation and Refresher Courses conducted by the Academic Staff College of the University. The Computer Centre was assigned the responsibility of designing the training module and conducting it, which it has been doing ever since.

    From 1993 onwards, the Computer Centre has been conducting two week Computer Appreciation courses for the teachers of the Himachal Pradesh University. The centre also conducted Refresher Courses in Computer Application for college teachers and the two weeks training course for different colleges of neighbouring states. The Computer Centre plans to make a major effort in achieving total computer literacy in the university. The centre introduced two weeks computer awareness courses for university employees. Two such courses had already been successfully completed. It has also successfully conducted two Orientation Programme in Computer Application in association with the Deptt. Of Computer Science during Sept. Oct. 1994, a Refresher Course in Computer Application on its own during April May, 1995 and Refresher Course in Computer Application in June 1996. Courses had been organised to provide technical inputs to the teachers of the affiliated colleges in which a Vocational Course in Computer Application has been started.
    The Computer Centre developed various programs in FORTRAN as per the data analysis requirements of the Research Scholars. The Scientific and stastistical Package(SSP) was made available to those Scholars who wished to write their own programs. Subsequently Statistical Package for Social Sciences(SPSS) was also purchased as it was more acceptable to the Research Scholars of the non-science departments
    For the Administration wing of the University, the Computer Centre has been, ever since its inception, helping the Accounts branch in the payroll processing. For the budget branch of the University, the Computer Centre has helped in preparing consolidated annual reports and expense forecasting. The Computer Cente has set up a Computer Cell in the Vice Chancellors Office, and trained its staff in the use of Computers.

    The Computer Centre is actively involved in providing technical help to the Univesity Library in the implementation of the INFLIBNET Programme. Besides this, the Computer Centre has been helping various sections of the University like the recruitment branch, the acquisition baranch of the library, the library of the Academic Staff College etc. in their software requirements of system developments.
    The Computer Centre plans to make a major effort in achieving total computer literacy in the university. The centre introduced two weeks computer awareness courses for university employees. Two such courses had already been successfully completed.
    It plans to computerise Examination system that will include Student Registration, Admission process as well as Entrance Test.
    It plans to launch need based short term computer courses on self financing.
