Telecommunications engineering or telecom engineering is a discipline of engineering that brings together electrical engineering with computer science to enhance telecommunication systems. A telecommunication engineer designs and looks after the installation of telecommunications equipment and facilities, such as complex electronic switching systems, copper wire telephone facilities and fiber optics.
Telecommunications engineers are involved in designing and installing equipment used for transmitting wired phone, cellular, cable and broadband data. They use a variety of equipment and transport media to design the telecom network infrastructure. Telecommunications engineers have bachelor's degrees in electrical or electronics engineering.
