Department of Physics
The Department of Physics at IIST offers several courses that constitute the core of the B. Tech Programme in Physical Sciences. We also have a Ph. D. Programme in the frontier areas of Experimental and Theoretical Physics. A Masters Programme in Adaptive optics, catering to specific goals of ISRO, will be offered soon.

Department of Mathematics
The department of mathematics was started in 2007 at the inception of IIST. It offers courses at undergraduate and post graduate level. A two year M.Tech programme in softcomputing is being run by the department. The faculty members in the department carrying out research in the following areas. 1.Mathematical Theory of Control, Applied Functional Analysis, Soft Computing. 2.Rheology, Atmospheric and magnetospheric chaos, Time series analysis. 3.Partial Differential Equations, Mathematical Elasticity, Homogenization, Finite Element Methods.

The Department of Humanities offers courses in Communication Skills, Economics, Management Studies, Introduction to Social Sciences and Ethics, etc. Here, we firmly believe in developing the interpersonal communication between teachers and students as well as creating an environment that will synergistic ally link science to the betterment of the society. As a whole, the department aims at developing an awareness regarding various issues concerning society and to bring in an all-enhancing and holistic development of the students.

Department of Chemistry is established to undertake teaching in the undergraduate and postgraduate level where strong foundations are laid facilitating the design and development of novel materials and processes to meet future technological challenges. The department offers courses for the chemical system stream of the B.Tech Physical sciences and an M.Tech. programme on chemical systems.

Department of Aerospace Engineering
Aerospace Engineering deals with design and development of aircrafts, launch vehicles, and spacecrafts. Unlike most traditional ground based systems, optimality and reliability are of paramount importance in such systems. This necessitates accurate theoretical and experimental analyzes of a variety of phenomena, and performance predictions of a variety of complex systems. Aerospace Engineering is the discipline which is closest to what is popularly known as “Rocket Science”.
