As envisaged in the National Policy of Education (revised plan of action 1992), the University Grants Commission introduced Vocationalisation of Education (Career Orientation) at the first degree level from 1994-95.The objective of Vocationalisation of Education Scheme at the first degree level was to ensure that the students develop knowledge, skills and attitude for gainful employment with major emphasis to be given to the possibility of self employment. Seed Technology was also sanctioned replacing one of the subjects in the conventional system i.e. B.Sc. courses.
The University Grants Commission’s X Plan document emphasized generalist education need to be made career oriented so that rather than clamoring for administrative government jobs (which are in stagnation presently and bound to be on decline in future) the technology based generalists would find more opening at skill demanding employability.
In view of the above, the Department of Seed Technology was established in 1994 and later on the Department was renamed as Department of Seed Science & Technology in Year 2003. The department has been entrusted with responsibility of undertaking teaching, research and extension in various aspects of Seed Science and Technology and also for coordinating the seed research programmes in other research stations.
