The Department of Anthropology was establishment on 01.12.1976 with the aim of teaching at undergraduate level in Srinagar Garhwal Campus of the University. It was started by Dr. A. P. Singh, who is the founding faculty of the Department. Lets on, the Department was upgraded to the teaching at Post-graduate level in 1980.
The Department has in first Professor/Head as Prof. R. S. Negi who is a renowned anthropologist having worked previously as Director of Indira Gandhi National Museum of Man at Bhopal (M.P). In Present head of the Department Professor. Hari Bhajan Singh Chauhan. (22.12.2007 to on wards).
At present the Department of Anthropology has 01 Professor, 02 readers, 03 Part-Time Lecturer. The Department has the distinction of having completed various research projects and input teaching both at the under-graduate and Post-graduate level as well as Ph. D, Level. In future the Department proposes to start the M. Sc in Forensic Science and M. Phil in Anthropology.
