Physics Department was established in the year 1962 as one of the science .Departments of the Birla Government Degree College, Srinagar (Garhwal) and was upgraded to the Post Graduate Level in 1972.
In 1973, Garhwal University was established. University took over Physics Department as a centre for UG, PG, teaching and Research activities in physics under its constituent set up.
Research work in various branches began with the establishment of University .The Department made proposal for establishing a computer centre under it during sixth five year plan. The centre was sanctioned on the basis of our proposal. Subsequently it was separated from Physics Department and became an independent unit. An proposal for University Science Instrumentation centre was also moved by this department, which was sanctioned by UGC under seventh plan. Now it is also working as an independent unit. With the establishement of the University Campus at Chauras (at the right bank of river Alaknanda). The postgraduate and research activities of the Department had already been shifted partially to this new campus .The Department is maintaining a rich library.A well-equipped computer lab has been established in the Department under DST-FIST program.
Various research schemes of DST, UGC, MNES etc. have been successfully completed in the Department. Many Research Scholars have successfully competed their D.Phil, degrees under guidance of faculty members in the Department in solid state Physics/Material Science, Molecular Spectroscopy, Asrto Physics and Particle Physics.
