Formally inaugurated on June 16, 1983, Guru Ghasidas University is located at Bilaspur and is one of the two universities in Chhattisgarh State - India. It has been named after Guru Ghasidas, the founder of the Satnami movement in the region. The jurisdiction of the University is spread across the Bilaspur Revenue Division. It covers almost the entire spectrum of the higher education requirements of the local people. It has several University Teaching Department (UTDs) on its campuses and about 125 colleges affiliated to it. The University is a residential cum affiliating institution, having its jurisdiction spread over Bilaspur Revenue Division of the state of Chhattisgarh. The University covers almost the total spectrum of higher education; University Teaching Departments and about hundred & twenty five affiliated colleges offering various courses in the areas of Arts, Commerce, Education, Engineering & Technology, Law and Humanities, Life Sciences, Management, Medicine, Pharmacy, Sciences, Social Sciences, etc. Campus Guru Ghasidas University has two campuses. One located at Bilaspur and the second located at Ambikapur. The lush green sprawling main campus of the University spread over an area of 875 acres is located five kilometers away from the main Bilaspur town. River Arpa, the lifeline of Bilaspur, runs parallel to the University campus. Bilaspur is a fast Industrializing city, already having a large number of industrial units coming up in the region.
