Located in As an oldest institution the Government E. Raghavendra Rao Postgraduate Science College, Bilaspur is primarily a branch of a private college popularly known as SBR College that was established in 1944 by Shiv Bhagwan Rameshwardin just to provide cheap higher education to the promising children of surrounding as well as far off areas of the state. Later in 1972 it was taken over by the Government of Madhya Pradesh and continued its status till 1986. The college drew an attention of state Government and under the policy it was raised to the status of Model College in 1986 with separation of Arts & Commerce faculty and the UGC accorded it recognition under section 2 (f) & 12 (B) on 15th July, 1986, consequently the science faculty had been developed into Govt. Postgraduate Science Model College. In the year 1987, the Government and UGC found it fit to be an autonomous college, though it could be adopted autonomous structure in 1993-94 and ever since then the college has been a full-fledged academic autonomy in both UG & PG program. The college had accredited as B+ grade by NAAC in 2005 and the Government of Chhattisgarh has awarded the status of ‘Centre for Excellence in Science’ in 2006 and changed its name as Government E. Raghavendra Rao Postgraduate Science College. Further it has been achieved the status of ‘College with Potential for Excellence’ from University Grants Commission, New Delhi in 2010-11 and accredited as Grade – ‘A’ by NAAC in 2015. Earlier this institution was affiliated to Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur, then after from 1984 to 2012, it was catered by Guru Ghasidas University, Bilaspur that has been upgraded as Central University and college’s affiliation shifted to Bilaspur University, Bilaspur, a newly established university of Chhattisgarh state, presently known as Atal Bihari Bajpaye Vishwavidyalay, Bilaspur., The College is an academic and research oriented center of excellence in the science discipline with a glorious past, a dynamic present and a brilliant future. In present session the student strength is 1419 at UG level and 442 at PG level. At present the College has well established 11 departments with 06 Research Centers recognized by the University. Under semester system, it offers 10 subject combinations (4 - 6 in Maths. & Bio) at UG level with several papers of discipline/generic choice & skill based courses as open choice following Choice Based Credit System and 06 subjects (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology) at PG level, besides these courses BCA & PGDCA are also conducted smoothly. At present there are 30 regular faculty members (05 Promoted Professors, 25 Assistant Professors) and 04 Guest faculties against 34 sanctioned posts, excluding 07 Supporting teachers under self finance scheme. There are a gazetted non-teaching staffs as Sports officer and 26 non-teaching staff, of which 10 are technical and 16 non-technical against a total of 28 sanctioned posts., The college has a green sprawling campus of 30 acres with a grand main building containing 11 lecture hall including 05 smart classes, 11 UG laboratory, 06 PG laboratory (for both year separately, 06 research laboratory, 12 department, an Auditorium, a central Library, a central laboratory, autonomous examination cell, IQAC, UGC/RUSA cell, autonomous cell, college Office with lead college cell, common staff chamber Principal’s chamber, separate office of Additional Director and an open Air Pandal with stage; a hostel for boys, Playground, Badminton Court, well equipped Multi-Gym, Conference Hall, Girls common room, Cycle/ Car stands, Stationary corner, 09 wash room(separate for boys, girls and staff), Canteen, Botanical garden, and IGNOU Study center in the college premises. Computerization of Office, Accounts, Student Admission, Library and Examination Section, Wi –Fi based internet facility and energy supply by solar system are the achievements of institution during the past few years. SOUL Software, Networking Resource Centre, Education CDs, Reading Room and Heritage Corner etc. are the main attractions of the Central Library., Moderating and redesigning of courses as per UGC module and needs of students, introduction of seminar, project work (internal & external), field study, modular course, semester pattern of Examination with continuous evaluation system are some of the benefits of autonomy, which the college has implemented effectively. With a view to making the education more community based, various outreach programs such as Blood Donation Camp, Health Camp, Disaster Management Programmers, Sanitation, Road Safety, Weekend environmental issues are taken up through the NCC, NSS, Youth Red Cros wing of the college. Regularly organized classes, Extra-moral lectures, interaction with students in Tutorial and Practical Classes, Remedial Classes etc. are aimed at inculcating moral values in the students. The NCC/NSS students of the college have participated in both Independence Day and Republic Day parades at the state and National levels and got several national / state levels Prize / Medal / Scholarship. The alumni of the college have excelled themselves in different fields and also continue to take active interest in the development to the college., This is the only autonomous college of this region having immense potential for higher education with research activities in science disciplines, also for growth and expansion to meet the demand of the future generation and provides the platform for science disciples. So far as the academic environment of the college is concerned, only one fact is enough to highlight the quality education it has been imparting since its inception and it is that more than 100 scholars have been awarded the degree of Ph. D. by the university after their successful research work done under the supervision of the faculty members. Most of the faculty members are eligible for supervising the research work and they are imparting valuable guidance to the registered scholars. Presently, 28 scholars are enrolled in Ph. D. course in the various departments of the institution. The extra-curricular activities, involving the students and the faculty members, have added varied sparkling gems to the crowning glory of the college. The literary and cultural activities have given the students opportunities to exhibit their talent at district, division and state level competitions., The College, which is a premier institution of this region for science education, strives to provide a balanced holistic education to students. It has set a benchmark by providing education of very high academic standard. It has produced distinguished alumni who have carved niches for themselves in not only the region, but also the nation.
