Established in 1963 as a post graduate centre of the University of Kerala, the Department became a part of the University of Calicut in 1968. Since then it has immensely contributed to post graduate teaching and research in history. Eminent historians such as Dr. T.K. Raveendran, Dr. M.G.S Narayanan, Dr. K.K.N Kurup, Dr. M.G. Sreekumaran Nair and Dr. A.P. Ibrahim Kunju have headed the department and taught courses. The faculty, research scholars and the alumni of the Department have enriched various facets of teaching and research in history through their scholarly contributions. The Department has conducted several summer institutes, workshops and seminars with assistance from the UGC, ICHR and other funding agencies since 1973. Besides being honoured with national/international fellowships, the Department faculty have been associated in several capacities with ICHR. The Department library has a collection of over 23000 books and journals, some of which are rare. The Department also has a manuscript library and a museum consisting of megalithic iron impliments, pottery,models of megalithic monuments and other artifacts collected form megalithic sites in different parts of northern Kerala.
