Ever since its establishment in 1971, the Department has played a significant role in the advancement of higher studies and research in Hindi in Malabar, the northern region of Kerala. It has given academic leadership in some of the new areas like Hindi drama and theatre, translation studies and Bhakti literature. In these and related areas, the faculty of the Department has done extensive research. In addition, the Department has conducted several national/international seminars and workshops on various aspects of Hindi literature. The library of the Department has a collection of over 18800 books and journals. As of 2004, 78 scholars have obtained Ph.D Degrees in various aspects of Hindi under the guidance of the Department faculty.
