Established in 1969, the Department has come to be recognized as a leading academic centre for studies in English language and literature in Kerala. The teaching and research tradition set by former faculty members such as Prof. C. T. Thomas, Dr. S. Velayudhan and several renowned teachers including Prof. C. A. Shepard, Dr. Jim Davy, Prof. G. Kumara Pillai and Prof. M. G. Sudhakaran Nair is being continued by the present faculty of the Department. In accordance with the requirements of times new areas of studies relating to literature and related disciplines have been introduced in the syllabi of the post graduate courses. The research scholars under the supervision of the faculty are working on topics relating to different literatures in English, theory, women’s writing, English language teaching, comparative studies and linguistics. During the past decades, 36 students have been awarded Ph.D Degrees. The Department has conducted several seminars including one International Seminar on Canadian Studies. It brings out a biannual Journal Interventions. The Department Library has a rich collection of over 20,000 books and journals.
