Diphu Govt. College was established in 1964 with the main aim of providing higher education in the backward Karbi Anglong District of Assam. Distinguished local leaders of that time like Chatrasing Teron, Chandra sing Teron, Dhaniram Rongpi, Gojendra Nath Goswami, Joysing Doloi, Sar Rongpi,(who are no more now) P.K. Baruah were among its founders. When the academic session started from July,1965. Prof. P.K. Bhuyan was the first Principal of the college. Thus began a new venture in the field of higher education. In the year 1967 it was taken over by the Govt. of Assam and since then the college has never looked back. Within a few years the college got its own building which provides accommodation for class rooms, office room, department staff rooms, auditorium, library etc. Besides, there are two Girls’ Hostels and one Boys’ hostel. There are 23 quarters for teachers and 8 quarters for non-teaching staff in addition to one full furnished official residence for Principal.
Over the years, the college made much progress in infrastructural development out of grants received from several sources like UGC, KAAC, Govt. of India, Govt. of Assam and from MP LAD fund. The college has a beautiful botanical garden cum recreation park, one peace park, one state of art Auditorium with all facilities, Seminar Hall ( A/C), Cultural Museum, Fully A/C Computer Lab, Office Automation Software, Computerized Library management.
The emblem of the College is the Jambili Athon, which is also the cultural sysmbol of the Karbis. The Jambili Athon is an artifact , made from wood of Bengvoi Tree ( Holarrhina antidysenterica), and on the side of the main stem are four branches. On the main stem, there is the Vojaru (Drongo bird) and on the side branches are perched by different kinds of birds. In addition , the Jambili Athon is studded by Sobai (Couries). According to tradition the Vojaru stands for the Karbi King and the other species of birds perched on the side branches symbolize the representatives from the traditional territorial divisions of the Karbi Kingdom. In short, the Jambili Athon reflects the social pattern of the Karbis. It is the art gallery of the Karbi Society. At the background is the hill which symbolizes the hilly life of the local people. Just below the Jambili Athon is the lighted lamp which symbolizes the light of knowledge that dispels darkness and ignorance. The whole symbol is encircled by the motto and name of the College. Just below the name of the college is the year of establishment. This emblem is selected for the college since the institution is situated in Karbi Anglong (Karbi Hills), a district carved out and named after the Karbi Tribe.
