The university was founded through the Assam Don Bosco University Act, 2009, on 9 January 2009 and created under the Assam Private Universities Act 2007, in Assam. The university is a project of the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB) executed by the Don Bosco Society, Azara, Guwahati.
The university is located in Guwahati, Assam.

The university was set up as a response to the educational needs of the people of North-East India by an educational society -Salesians of Don Bosco. Ever since the establishment of St. Anthony’s College at Shillong in 1934, the Salesians have set up and run higher educational institutions in North-East India.
