Department of Social Work
The Department of Social Work was establishment in November 1995 with 120 students. At present there are 200 students (two batches). We have twenty qualified teachers engaged in Social Work training and other developmental activities. The total intake of students in a year is 105 including admissions based on constitutional reservations. The course is of two year duration consisting four semesters. It offers specializations in
* Rural and Urban Community Development
* Medical and Psychiatric Social Work
* Family and Child Welfare
* Human Service Organisations’ Administration.
This is the only Social Work Department in Kerala in Government undertaking. All other social work training institutions are either self-financing or under the private managements which do not cater to the needs of the ordinary but talented students of lower and middle classes. The students we get in the University are from the middle class families and after studies they are well placed in various social work agencies throughout India and are well appreciated by people of different walks. We are proud to state that our students are getting placed in prestigious educational institutions like NIMHANS Bangalore, IIPS Mumbai, JNU, Delhi University etc for higher studies. The Associations of Trained Social Workers in USA, New Zealand, Australia and UK have also accredited the MSW degree awarded by the University.
The Department also has taken up different programmes with social concern and significance independently or in collaboration with NGOs and GOs. At present the Department holds a Targeted Intervention Project (Kalady PSH Project) in the Kalady, Angamaly and Perumbavoor area for the prevention of AIDS and HIV infection. Recently KSACS has sanctioned the proposal submitted by the Department to conduct a study on Situational Analysis of CBOs in Kerala. The Department has plans to take up Research programmes pertaining to socially and academically significant issues with financial and technical collaborations. The Department can also give consultancy to the government and other organizations relating to social welfare programmes and activities.
