About Department of History

Background, academic mission, and departmental profile

The Department of History, established in 1997, under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences offers courses in M.A History and integrated M.Phil — Ph.D. programme. The Department has 13 members in its Faculty, including one Professor and Two Readers. The members have specialization in Ancient, Medieval and Modern History, especially in relation to Maritime Studies, Diaspora, Gender Studies, Social and Economic History, etc., in addition to Cultural Studies of South Asia. The members who are actively engaged in research and publication have already brought out many works of considerable standard. About 20 students currently engaged in Ph.D programmes are regularly contributing research articles to standard journals and other publications. Thus the Department has stamped its unique identity as a catalyst that helps to contextualize historically the diverse themes and issues that figure in the different branches of Sanskrit courses offered by the University. The thrust area of the Department is social formation in the ancient, medieval and modern periods of Indian History with a special emphasize on the social formation of Kerala, which has an unbroken continuity of Sanskrit traditions.
