Established since 1995, Department of Painting in the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit aimed to produce ideological input and craft in talented persons who wish to choose art as their career in life. Curriculum is planned to access international standard of Art Education through its unique teaching methods. The way of teaching permits ample opportunity for personal growth to each individual student through practices in specified areas such as practical arts studies in studios, theoretical studies on art and practice of art outside the curriculum.
The course offered by this Department is unique in the studies, as Sanskrit Language is unavoidable. It begins with the studies of Devanagari alphabets leading to learning of Sanskrit texts relevant to the studies on Art, which offers all a new outlook. The theoretical studies on art have two extensive wings — History of art and Aesthetics. The studies in History of Art provides necessary knowledge of art practices from old stone age to present day as well as the studies on aesthetics lead the student to develop ideological bearings to produce art which holds social commitment. Generally the students are provided necessary ideological backing to see art as a visual language acceptable to global sensibilities.
There are two kinds of practical studio curses offered by this department. When the first one is based on generally accepted and known basic streams of Global art concepts, the other is practically set on studies of traditional Mural art in Kerala. We introduce practices to learn traditional methods of preparing colours from vegetation, earth and natural objects; preparation of surface in traditional manner, and rendering of picture in particular Kerala traditional style. Also it offers chances to learn other traditional methods of Mural making in the various parts of the world.
In the course generally known as BFA — Painting, offers development of oneself to basically an artist himself. Classes are arranged to learn from Still life, Nature surrounded professional modeling and also given ample space to develop one’s creative abilities. Creative pursuits are given more weightage to drive them to establish themselves as Professional artists.
Our graduates find job opportunities in Fashion design, Applied Arts, Applied Graphics, Designing, Architectural Designing and so on.
