Department of Sanskrit Nyaya

Department of Nyaya was started in 1994 at the Headquarters Kalady and Regional Centre Thiruvananthapuram. The Department offers courses for B.A., M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. there are M.A., and B.A. courses in Thiruvanthapuram Regional Centre. Along with those in Main centre, Kalady, there are courses for M.Phil and Ph.D. also. M.A. course in Nyaya began in the Regional Centre Thrissur from 2005 onwards.

Nyaya philosophy is one of the six orthodox systems of Indian Philosophy and its study is considered very helpful to attain thorough knowledge in other systems. In Kerala, traditionally Nyayasastra was taught in certain places. Even in this age of globalization, the study of Nyaya philosophy survives in very few places.

The Department of Nyaya follows the syllabus of syncretic Nyaya Vaisesika Darsanas. In the field of Research we follow the comparative method, attached with scientific thinking. In this respect we observe not only the theistic and atheistic systems but also the western concepts as well.

The Department has conducted Seminars, extension lectures, and short-term courses. A workshop was conducted on the technical terms of Navya-Nyaya. Many distinguishes scholars from various institutions participated in the workshop.

For introducing Ancient Indian Intellectual traditions, the Nyaya Department conducted a short-term course on Navya-Nyaya Language and methodology from 15th May 2000 to 26th May 2000. Dr. V.N. Jha, Professor and Director, Centre for advanced study in Sanskrit, University of Pune was invited as course director. Many teachers, not only form this university, but also from other universities participated and completed the course successfully.

A National seminar was conducted by the Department on ‘Nyaya-Vaisesika theories of Knowledge’ on 26th and 27th Feb, 2003. Eminent scholars presented papers.

A National seminar on ‘Nyaya-vaisesika Categoriology’ as also organized by the Department of Nyaya from 29th to 31st March, 2004. Eminent scholars from various Universities in the country participated in it and presented papers.

It is proposed to introduce new departments under the faculty of Nyaya like

(1) Department of Buddhist Logic

(2) Department of Jaina Logic.

New courses and Research projects shall be introduced in these Departments, following comparative and scientific methods of study.
